• Pet owners are encouraged to play and interact with their cat as much as possible and to reduce any changes in the cat's environment to help slow further mental decline. Placing numerous litter boxes around the home or showing the litter box to the cat throughout the day can help prevent bathroom accidents. Prescription diets rich in fatty acids and supportive nutrients may also slow cognitive decline in cats. Veterinarian-prescribed medications may improve cognitive function and slow dementia in cats, and pheromone therapy may help to calm the cat and reduce any anxiety associated with dementia.
